Article number (SKU) for products and variants

This article explains what article numbers are, why they are important, and how you should use them for products and variants to ensure correct inventory management, reporting, and POS system usage.

What is an article number?

All products in Acendy are automatically assigned a unique Product ID in the system. This is used for, among other things:

  • communication with payment solutions such as Klarna or Vipps
  • import and export of products via CSV

This means that article numbers are not an absolute requirement for the online store to function, but it is strongly recommended to use them actively for better control and more efficient operation.

Article numbers on products

  • Should be unique per product
  • Can be set manually or based on the supplier's item number

Unique article numbers provide better structure and fewer errors in daily operations – especially when working with inventory, POS, and reports.

Advantages of unique article numbers:

  • POS (Point of Sale): Necessary for correct use of the POS system and inventory management
  • Reporting: Provides more precise sales reports and a better basis for decision-making
  • Inventory Management: Makes it easier to keep track of stock
  • Search Visibility: Can contribute positively to organic visibility if item numbers are clearly displayed on product pages

Article numbers on variants

If you have products with variants (for example, size or color), each inventory-managed variant should have its own unique SKU.

In practice, each variant is treated as a separate product when it comes to inventory and reporting. Without unique SKUs for variants, the risk of incorrect inventory status and inaccurate sales figures increases.

To maintain a good overview, it is recommended to link the variant's SKU to the main product.

Example:

  • Main product: L3000
  • Variants:
    • L3000-1
    • L3000-2
    • L3000-3

Best practice

  • Consistency is important: Choose one system / format and use it consistently.
  • Flexibility: You can use your own SKUs or the supplier's existing ones.
  • Think long-term: Avoid reusing numbers. A tidy structure saves you a lot of manual work later.
