# Category and manufacturer page

This guide helps you set up and optimize the category page in your online store. By structuring the content correctly, you improve the user experience and increase the chance of sales.

## Category and manufacturer page

This guide helps you set up and optimize the category page in your online store. By structuring the content correctly, you improve the user experience and increase the chance of sales.

The design template shares the same page for both category and manufacturer. This means that the layout created on the category page will also be reflected on the manufacturer page, provided that the content (sections and blocks) is available on the manufacturer page.

## Edit category

1. Open the design builder
2. Open the "Category page" template in the page selector in the top menu

## Available sections and blocks

The category page has several sections and blocks that can be used to achieve the desired look. For example, you can add sections for rows, carousels, columns, and images.

Note that the sections added here, such as images, will be displayed on **all** categories. To display text/images for each specific category, this must be entered in the category's description.

### Category description

In the "Category description" section, you add both the category title and category description.
When these blocks are added to the section, you will see the name and description (if the category has a description) for each category.

In category description settings, you can choose whether to display top description or bottom description.

Read how to add descriptions to categories.

### Category Title

Category Title is displayed for all categories and manufacturers. This block allows you to adjust settings such as size, font weight, text alignment, and color.

💡 Category Title has the setting "Show title for manufacturer". This is active by default, but should be turned off if using the "Manufacturer's logo" block

### Manufacturer's logo

Through the "Manufacturer's logo" block, you can display the manufacturer's logo in addition to the manufacturer's name (if desired). If this block is added, it is recommended to deactivate the category title at the manufacturer level to avoid duplicate names.

- **Display type:** Choose between "logo" and "Logo and name".
- **Logo settings:**
- - Alignment (left, center, right)
    - Image height: logo's right
    - Prefix for logo: If display type is "Logo and name", you can use this to add a prefix before the manufacturer's name. E.g. "Products from `manufacturer name`Font size: the size of the manufacturer name

💡 If the "Manufacturer's logo" block is used and the manufacturer does not have a logo, the manufacturer's name will be displayed.

### Product Section

This section contains the blocks that make it possible to display products and subcategories.

#### Products in grid

This block is required for products to be displayed on category pages.
The block allows you to change which product box is displayed, as well as the general layout of columns, margins, and padding.

- **Category list settings:** This setting is only active if an alternative display type is used. See below.
- **Variant buttons:** Enables alternative display of variants at category level.

#### Subcategories

With subcategories, you can display an overview of available subcategories on the category page. This makes it easy for customers to click through to find the product they are looking for.

The block can be placed both above and below "Products in grid" — the placement follows the order of the blocks in the section. One subcategory block is allowed per product section.

To customize the design, it is recommended to display a category in the preview that actually has subcategories.

**Which setting is required depends on whether the store uses a filter:**

- **Stores with filter** (the Filter extension is active and "Show filter products" is on): the block retrieves subcategories directly from the category tree. No extra configuration is required.
- **Stores without filter:** the setting "Show subcategories on the main category page" must be active. You can find it in the control panel under "`Configuration > Category`

## Filter and subcategories simultaneously

The subcategory block and the filter do not exclude each other. A category page can display subcategories and filters simultaneously, regardless of whether the filter is placed as a horizontal row above the products or in a column next to them.

Here's how it works in a store with filters: products are indexed on their own category **and** on the categories above. A main category therefore lists the products from its subcategories, the filter gets something to filter on, and the subcategory block is also displayed. This requires no extension.

**How to set it up:**

1. Open the template for "Category page" in the design builder
2. Add the "Subcategories" block to the product section, along with "Products in grid"
3. Select the filter's placement in the design builder's general settings for category — "horizontal" provides a row above the products, "sidebar" provides a column next to the product list

Other filter settings in the same group: width of the filter column, filter style (open or accordion), button to hide the filter, as well as placement of sorting and selected filters.

**Exceptions to be aware of:** the extension "Allow products in main categories" has an additional setting — "Also follow this setting for stores using filters". If it is on, the roll-up is turned off: the main category then only shows the products that are directly assigned to it. Subcategories are still displayed, but the product list and filter may become empty if no products are directly linked to the category.

## Display types

The category template supports two views: standard with product boxes, and list view.

List view replaces product boxes with an alphabetical overview of product names. The customer gets one link per product, grouped under the letter the name starts with, plus a search field and letter buttons to jump down the page. No images, no prices, no buy button — just the name.

This makes the view useful for categories where the customer knows the product name and just needs to find it quickly: spare parts, item numbers, titles, chemicals. For categories where image and price sell the product, stick to product boxes.

The view is selected per category. The default is product boxes, and the selection is not inherited by subcategories — each category must be set individually.

Note that the filter is not tied to the view type — it is controlled by the Filter extension and works in both standard view and list view. The search field in the list view is different from the filter.

### How to activate list view

1. Activate the "Category Templates" extension under Extra Services
2. Go to Products > Categories in the control panel
3. Edit the category you want to change (pencil icon)
4. Open the "Select category view" tab and choose `List`
5. Save

The category will show list view immediately after saving. If you want to return to product boxes, select `Grid` in the same tab.

### What the customer sees

- Product names in one column on mobile and three columns on larger screens, distributed down the columns
- A heading per letter, with the products below
- Letter buttons at the top that scroll to the correct part of the list. Only letters that actually have products are shown
- A search field that filters the list as the customer types, highlighting the match in the name
- The category's usual filter, if you have it active

Products are sorted alphabetically by the first character in their name. The category's own sorting is not used in this view. Products starting with numbers or special characters get their own group before letters — a product named "3M-tape" will be listed under "3".

### Good to know

**The list follows the pagination.**The list view shows the products on the current page, not the entire category. If the category has more products than the "Number of products per page" setting, the list is divided across multiple pages — and the letters are distributed accordingly. Therefore, the customer will not necessarily find all products starting with "S" on the first page. The search field also only searches within the products on the current page. For categories where the complete overview is the point, set "Number of products per page" high enough to cover the category.

**The layout is fixed.**The only thing you can control in the design builder is the highlight color, under "Category list settings" in the "Products in grid" block. The color is used for the letter headings, letter buttons, and search results. The rest of the layout — columns, spacing, typography — is fixed. Note that the setting is visible in the design builder even when the category uses product boxes, but then it has no effect.

**Only categories, not manufacturers.**The category and manufacturer pages share the same design template, but list view is selected for a category. Manufacturer pages therefore always show product boxes.

**If you disable the extension, the selections are retained.**Categories that were set to list view revert to product boxes, and will get list view back if the extension is reactivated. You do not need to set them up again.
